Combating migrant smuggling has been one of the top priorities of European migration policy since 2015, with huge financial resources being invested in this policy objective. This study examines the reality of anti-smuggling efforts in Greece and analyses the current legal framework and its practical implementation. We have observed and documented 81 trials with 95 affected persons and have come across a legal vacuum in which violence and arbitrary justice are carried out to deter other people from fleeing.
