Shrinking civic space discussed at the European Parliament

(Civil Society Europe) The members of the European Parliament will discuss tomorrow at the presence of the European Commission and the Council about shrinking space in Europe. Civil  Society Europe has disseminated a statement to the EU institutions proposing some concrete actions to redress this situation.

This debate comes at a timely moment when law restricting the right to civic freedoms have been adopted in a number of EU countries, and further proposals are being discussed currently in Hungary, affecting a very wide variety of civil society organisations, and people on the ground.

In addition to using all legal instruments available to challenge legislation that is counter EU Treaties and the Charter of Fundamental rights, EU institutions must develop a long term strategy to ensure the development of a vibrant and diverse civil society, which is at the basis of a strong democracy.
