In October 2025, Aleš Šutar was beaten to death by a group of Roma men, outside a club in Novo Mesto, Slovenia. The killing sparked outrage and anti-Roma discourses among citizens in Slovenia. In November, the Slovenian National Assembly enacted the Šutar law, which expands police powers, by enhancing surveillance capacities and allowing entry into “high-risk” areas without a warrant. This law has been widely criticized by Roma civil society, which argued that it could allow racial profiling and worsen discrimination against Roma people.
