(Crosol) In recent years we have seen the rise of the so called illiberal democracy politics in Eastern European EU member states. The recent political events in Poland and Hungary might be the best example of such politics where citizens increasingly support political parties whose political objectives are against the EU rule of law principles and respect of all human rights.
We – citizens of Eastern European countries, citizens of Europe, are saying that we do not support the rise of illiberal democracies. The idea of solidarity and democracy must survive in Europe.
Only together we can heal our democracies.

Grafitti artists from Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Latvia have been asked to paint murals reflecting the recent illiberal trends in our democracies. Here is what they came up with:

“We’ve arrived to an intersection where we have to decide – once again – the direction we want to take. Do we allow illiberal democracy to keep us in chains, or do we join forces and fly free towards a more just world order?”.

On the contrary, a word unspoken lives in the darkness of thoughts and ideas waiting until the light comes and somebody else has courage and responsibility to act”.

„Illiberal trends in Europe are bringing the past back to the centre of political life. Fear and uncertainty among citizens are posing a question on quality of the existing social contract. Are we falling back to the pre-contract era of “homo homini lupus” position? Illiberal democracies and neoconservative agendas are prompting for new decisiveness, reformulating Mussolini’s “better wolf for one day, than being the sheep for hundred years”. Never in modern history of Europe has there been a stronger need for civil society control function – for its watchdog role to be played. There has never been a greater need for public scrutiny over „wolves“ of the government and capital more in demand. To put it in even more dramatic way: sheep should be capable of controlling the wolf’s nature in herself. Today.“
