Joint statement accessible on the website of FIDH, 23 March 2022
The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and other organizations call on the European Commission and the Council to refrain from approving recovery funds to the governments of Poland and Hungary and provide direct support to local authorities, civil society and human rights defenders providing for refugees of the war in Ukraine.
The open letter highlights concern around the discussions held on the idea of unblocking the EU Recovery and Resilience funds to Hungary and Poland. As explained in the letter this would send the wrong political message in regards to the EU position on the rule of law and democracy while not supporting frontline actors such as civil society organisations and human rights defenders in their humanitarian work for Ukrainian refugees.
