SOLIDAR Foundation: Lockdown is no excuse to bypassing Democracy

In the aftermath of the Coronavirus outbreak, SOLIDAR Foundation issued a briefing note. It notably calls upon national governments to act proportionately “vis-à-vis national Constitutions”.

The checks and balances behind our institutions are heavily tested while directly or indirectly deciding at fast speed what rights have the priority.

The note also brings in the spotlight three country cases (Hungary, Italy and Czech Republic). SOLIDAR Foudation thus aims to monitor rhetoric messages from governments and authorities and prevent further shrinking of civic space in this period, which could create “dangerous precedents for European democracies.”
