HUNGARY: Supreme Court upholds ban on Pride event

Prepared by: Okotars

Hungary’s Supreme Court upheld the ban on Pécs Pride, following the earlier ban on Budapest Pride, citing the Child Protection Act as amended by the homophobic and transphobic Propaganda Law. According to the court, public assemblies cannot advocate for LGBTQI+ rights. The organisers are challenging the ruling at the Constitutional Court and the European Court of Human Rights. Despite the ban, Pécs Pride went ahead on 4 October, with thousands of participants and organisers emphasising the importance of collective participation in defending freedoms of expression and assembly.
