HUNGARY: Sovereignty Protection Office escalates attacks on CSOs

Since January, the newly established Hungarian Sovereignty Protection Office (SPO) has released several reports targeting civil society. These include allegations against EU-funded programmes like CERV and international funders, such as USAID. The SPO’s head, Tamás Lánczi, has called for increased powers, hinting at a broader transformation into a policing authority. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has echoed these threats in recent speeches, suggesting new sanctions against foreign-funded organisations.
