Germany country update, May 2025
In February, MPs from Germany’s conservative CDU/CSU initiated a formal parlamentary inquiry titled “Political neutrality of state-supported organizations” targeting some of the most prominent organisations working in democracy, advocacy, climate, animal rights, and non-profit journalism, questioning their public benefit status and the legitimacy of their advocacy work.
German authorities continue to employing censorship and surveillance, demonstration bans and arrests, racial profiling, banning of chants, selective surveillance and intimidation, restrictions on journalists, against Palestinian solidarity protests. The European Legal Support Center (ELSC) launched a database on anti-Palestinian repression in Germany. According to the centre, the data, covering over six years to date, shows that the anti-Palestinian repression is “systematic, institutional and undeniable”.
