On 19 October, in front of the European Commission Berlaymont building in Brussels, an encampment in solidarity with Palestine took place under the name of The People’s Encampment. A group of activists from across Europe gathered to call for the EU to terminate the EU-Israel Association Agreement, impose a military embargo on Israel, uphold international law and “end economic and political cooperation sustaining apartheid” in Palestine. The activists started the encampment on 19 October, with tents, sleeping mats, playing music and showing signs in solidarity with Palestine. Even before the protest began, the police carried out ID checks and seized some of the equipment and personal belongings of the demonstrators. The activists were surrounded by a constant police presence and maintained the encampment for 48 hours, until 12 am on 21 October, when the police dismantled it, citing “security” reasons and arrested some of the protesters.
