HUNGARY: Police ban Trans Pride demonstration in Budapest
Hungarian police banned a planned Trans Pride demonstration in Budapest scheduled for 29 March 2026 to mark the International Transgender Day of Visibility, citing the country’s “child protection” legislation. The event, organised by trans rights organisation Prizma Közösség, was intended as a peaceful gathering outside the Ministry of Justice to raise awareness about discrimination, stigmatisation and violence experienced by transgender people in Hungary.
According to the organisers and supporting human rights groups, including Amnesty International Hungary, the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Háttér Society, and the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, the Budapest police justified the ban because the demonstration allegedly violated Hungary’s law prohibiting the promotion of homosexuality and gender diversity to minors from 2025. As with previously banned Pride marches and LGBTQI+ events, CSOs have condemned the decision as a disproportionate and discriminatory restriction on the right to peaceful assembly and against LGBTQI+ people.
